Tips

When hanging most art on the wall hang it at eye level.  Assume eye level for people around 5' 3". (Lower is better than higher.)

Area rugs are a great tool for defining and "anchoring" a seating area.  I highly recommend them.  But do try to avoid rugs that have a medallion in the center as they will limit how you can use and display them. Instead go for a rug with an overall design.

When using a rug under a dining table it is preferable that it be large enough so that chairs, even when pulled back a bit for seating, remain on the rug.

If you are thinking to buy carpeting consider 100% olefin. I have found this fiber to be attractive and oh so easy to clean!  Spills don't penetrate.

If allergies are a problem you might avoid carpet altogether, or at least in your bedroom.  Like your bedding dustmites love what they find in all those fibers.  If you cannot get rid of the carpet just yet, there are safe products you can use - powders and sprays - on the carpet to cut back on dustmite problems.

Mirrors open up a space?  That's what we always hear from traditional designers.

But consider, what is the mirror is reflecting?
Often mirrors reflect only the ceiling or some other uninteresting view especially when you are seated.  This is often the case when they are placed over a fireplace.
Use mirrors where they will reflect natural light and a beautiful image.    Bathrooms and bedrooms are exceptions, of course.
